Fresh analysis reveals that people who come off blockbuster GLP-1 drugs like semaglutide or tirzepatide may regain reduced body mass at a significantly accelerated pace than those who stop conventional lifestyle programs.
Findings released in a major medical journal demonstrates that while overweight people frequently drop about a fifth of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the mass is regained at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.
"Users using such drugs need to be informed of the potential of quick rebound weight gain when the therapy ends," stated researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of regain suggests a return to pre-treatment weight in about a year and a half.
Weighing Therapies
The research, which examined 37 of trials involving over 9,000 of participants, compared the results of these new drugs with other pills.
Scientists note that individuals who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone usually have a more gradual weight regain—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.
Understanding the Rapid Regain
Experts suggest the way of the jabs explains the amplified weight return.
The injections copy a natural hormone called GLP-1, which helps regulate feelings of fullness.
"Artificially providing the hormone concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production could lead to the body to produce less of its endogenous hormone, and may also lessen sensitivity to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.
"Discontinuation of this medication results in hunger is no longer kept in check, making excessive eating a significant risk."
A Chronic Condition?
Medical guidelines advise the injections for people with obesity-related health risks, accompanied by prescribed lifestyle changes.
Professionals contend that, due to the significant potential of relapse, the therapy should be considered life-long.
This perspective is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the results "highlight the long-term character of excess weight," comparing it to managing diseases like diabetes.
Patient Accounts
Individuals who have discontinued the jabs describe a powerful return of appetite.
"I experienced a trigger activating and you're instantly starving," described one woman.
This challenge is exacerbated if users have not developed lasting dietary or behavioural changes during treatment.
Widespread Use
Recent estimates suggest that millions of adults in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with desire continuing to grow.
- Adoption is greater among women than men.
- The middle-aged age group shows the highest level of interest.
- Many obtain the drugs through private prescriptions rather than public health services.
In conclusion, clinicians stress that while the jabs are powerful tools for weight loss, they are not a standalone fix and lasting health benefits hinges on combined lifestyle management.
